Tips From A Pro on How to Treat Your Dog Like a Champion
Release provided by Purina

Professional breeder and handler Jere Marder provides 10 tips for caring for your dog to ensure that he or she is happy and healthy. Ms. Marder's dog, Ch. Lambluv's Desert Dancer, is the top winning Old English sheepdog in the history of the breed with 64 blue ribbons. She says that, "first and foremost, a dog's inner being is most important."

  1. Begin by choosing the right dog for your lifestyle. I recommend that you talk with breeders, vets, trainers and other reputable sources to find the best breed for you.
  2. Be sure to keep your dog in good weight: not overweight or too thin. Your vet can help you determine whether or not your pet is in good condition.
  3. Routine exercise is extremely important for a dog's mind and body. Jogging, biking, frisbee games, etc., all are good ways to exercise your dog and have fun at the same time. Do not exercise puppies the same way as adults. Avoid any strenuous exercise until puppies are at least one year old, depending on the breed. Do not over-exercise aging dogs, but do keep them active.
  4. Routine check-ups with your veterinarian are very important. Keep eyes and ears clean and nails trimmed. Seek veterinary care immediately if you sense your dog has a health problem.
  5. Groom your dog regularly: at least once a week for a coated dog. Bathe routinely depending on the condition of the dog. I bathe the white parts of the coat once a week and give a full body bath once a month.
  6. Crate-train your dog from puppyhood. It is a safe, protected environment for your pet. Crate training facilitates house breaking, keeps the dog out of trouble when you are not at home and provides a safe way to transport your dog.
  7. Start your puppy in a puppy kindergarten class as soon as possible. The class teaches basic obedience and gives many informative tips on the first several months of your dog's life. Continue on to basic obedience, or at least a canine "good citizen" class. A well-trained dog will be a joy to own.
  8. Early socialization is extremely important, so your dog feels secure no matter what situation arises. Take him everywhere with you and expose him to various sounds, people and other animals. Let various people pet and play with him and expose him to other dogs.
  9. Good nutrition for your dog is extremely important; without good nutrition you will not have a healthy, happy dog with a good coat, proper weight and in good condition. I use a complete and balanced dog food - Pro Plan® Lamb and Rice brand dog food. Use a quality food that fits the needs of your pet throughout puppyhood, adulthood and his senior years.
  10. Most importantly, have fun and spend quality time with your dog and he will become an important member of your family. If you teach him and love and care for him correctly, he will be your unconditional friend and companion forever.
