  Photgraphy and Editorial Guidelines

Dog & Kennel, Cats & Kittens and Bird Times are published bimonthly. These magazines contain beautiful full-color photographs, informative, authoritative and educational articles about the species and their care. The articles are written to educate and entertain the readers. In addition to articles on popular species, we include human-interest stories. The magazines contain columns dealing with training, questions and answers, grief, horoscopes, snips of information from the Internet, art and collectibles and special reports.

Photo Needs

Color photography of publication quality is required. Digital files with a minimum resolution of 266 dpi are preferred.

We are always looking for photographs of common pet birds such as cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, canaries, finches, doves and pigeons, and softbills--plus other exotics such as Amazons, cockatoos and macaws. Natural or colored portraiture type backgrounds are acceptable. Interactive people-bird shots are needed. In addition to portrait-type shots, we have an ongoing need for attractive photos of birds in household situations--in their cage, on a playpen, eating, bathing, etc. as well as clutches and baby birds in all stages of growth.

Photographs of all breeds of purebred dogs, random bred dogs and rare breeds in all life stages of growth from puppy through veteran years. Photographs are needed of dogs performing tasks for which they were bred, engaging in sports with their owners or sports developed specifically for dogs such flyball, interactive people-dog shots, portrait-type shots, attractive shots in all types of situations. Photos may be of dogs alone, with kids, adults and other dogs and animals.

Photographs of all breeds of cats, pedigreed as well as non-pedigreed in all life stages of growth from kitten through veteran years. Photographs are needed of cats in all types of situations. Photos may be of cats alone, with kids, adults and other cats and animals.

All material should be labeled with the breed of dog, cat or bird, the telephone number, name and address of the photographer. Note: photographer is responsible for correctly identifying the breeds/species of dogs, cats or birds in the photos. Photographs identified incorrectly in print due to photographers error cannot be paid.

We prefer to hold submissions on file for at least three months. Slides and transparencies intended for future consideration will be scanned to a CD-ROM and photographers' material will be returned.
